Severe winter until March, then the Smolensk tragedy, next two floods and also the recession which has started to affect stonemasons this year. All these things are not good for stone industry. It is hard to invest, make strategic decisions, and there are also fewer and fewer customers. Is there any hope to bounce back this year? Dominik Lis from Finnstone company has no doubts: The further we go into this year the bigger stagnation we experience.
Andrzej Wyrzykowski from Ingemar company agrees with Lis: Small stonemasons suffered the most and they comprise the essence of stone industry countertops, tombstones for not very rich customers; we have very few such orders now. The investors come either for the cheapest products or for luxurious high quality products. The anxiety in the market is also reflected in payment delays. The average time of ploughing your own money into the business lengthened from 5 to 9 months, says Paweł Bereza from Warsaw-based Pamir company. The growing euro and dollar rates may also worry they are unfavourable for the material import-based Polish stone industry.
