Nearly a hundred of Jewish tombstones from a destroyed cemetery in Mstów were found in the Warta river. Some images and inscriptions in Hebrew have been preserved on stone and iron grave slabs.
The former Jewish cemetery was founded in Mstów in late 19th century. Now, only a few matzevots and an outline of a limestone wall are left. A small necropolis was devastated during the Second World War when Germans destroyed the cemetery. Some matzevots were thrown into the river and some were used for building pavements. After many years the matzevots look like limestones and it is difficult to see the difference between them. On the matzevots, however, we can still see inscriptions in Hebrew and symbols that depict jobs which inhabitants of pre-war Mstów used to do. Cleaning and cataloguing of elements which were found in the river is in progress now. Next, experts will try to read the inscriptions. The finding is an effect of the research project of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education entitled „Sites of memory and oblivion. Interdisciplinary studies in the north of Kraków-Częstochowa Jura Chain”. The programme is being carried out under the National Programme for the Development of Humanities.
