The condition of the stone which adorns the surface of the main square in the city centre is getting worse and worse. Basalt cubes that connect the strips of granite cobblestones are extremely susceptible to damage.
Unfortunately, the city council has no possibility to replace the holes with new elements. It is like this because in the warehouses owned by the Roads and City Maintenance Authority there are neither basalt cubes nor even recycled materials. Buying a new, identical material is almost impossible because the quarry, where the stone, which used to cover a part of the market square’s surface, was extracted 17 years ago, is now closed. Changing of the decorative band which is situated in the main square of the city is planned in the coming months. Basalt will be most possibly replaced by a different type of stone. The choice of the particular material must be first agreed with the city’s art restorer. The use of granite might be one of the most probable solutions. Actually, this type of stone covers the bigger part of the surface of the market square in Wrocław.
