THE PROJECT OF THE MONUMENT IN SMOLENSK HAS BEEN CHOSEN

High, black, cracked wall made of granite, looking out at the square made of the same kind of stone ? this is the description of the Monument of the Smolensk Tragedy Victims. The winning project was presented a few days ago in the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsk.

The monument is to be raised several dozen metres away from the airport, near the place where the government plane with over 90 people on the board, including the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria, crashed on 10 April 2010. The unveiling of the monument is planned to take place during the third anniversary of the tragedy.

The winning team includes Andrzej Sołyga (also the co-author of the monuments in the Katyn Forest and in Bełżec), Dariusz Śmiechowski and Dariusz Komorek. The winning concept is a minimalistic project. The wall shows the record of the direction of the last phase of the plane movement from the east to the west.

High, black, cracked wall made of dark granite with inscribed names of the victims has a grave, cemetery character and, at the same time, constitutes a kind of a boundary. The wall is at one moment broken and we move to the platform made of granite. What we have in front of us then is just the sky and the place where the tragedy took place.
