The representatives of Nigerian ministries of mining industry and metallurgy as well as some government institutions took part in trade and technical mission to Italy. The delegation was also present at the fair in Carrara. The mission, which took place from 15 to 28 May, included the representatives of three institutions: the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (MMSD), the World Bank’s Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources Project and the Association of Dimension Stone of Nigeria (ADSON). The delegation included, among others, the representatives of ten stone producers who are launching granite and marble mines or processing plants.

The representatives from Nigeria had their own stand (C/22/623/) and the mission was a part of a promotion programme of the Nigerian stone sector. It was the first time from 1980s that Nigerian stone companies appeared on the international market. This is mainly due to the cooperation of private sector with the new government of the country. Nigeria is rich in rock minerals, especially granite. Currently, however, in the whole country there are only 20 quarries, 3 modern factories and a few smaller processing plants. Nigeria has, however, a high development potential – it has a good industrial and transport infrastructure and a receptive internal market which imports 250,000 tons of ready-made natural stone products, mainly tiles.
