Ukraine is a country which has a unique base of minerals and building materials. Ukrainian stone industry also has strong business connections with Polish companies. Currently Ukraine is in the possession of over 20,000 deposits and beds covering 117 kinds of raw materials. Among them, there are 8,658 deposits and 928 objects known as complex deposits which are included in the national balance of mineral resources. Over 3,000 deposits and 546 objects are industrialised which accounts for 40-75 per cent of the recognized reserves of various minerals.
Mineral resources is a major branch of Ukrainian economy. The rich raw mineral basis is responsible for 45 per cent of GDP and 62 per cent of export profits in Ukraine. As regards the variety and richness of mineral resources, Ukraine is ahead of such countries as the USA, Canada, the UK, France and China. Over 1,3 per cent of the world mineral resources is extracted here (in 1991 it was about 5 per cent). The annual production of mining industry in Ukraine is $25-28 billion (in the prices of the world market). In this group the natural stone is an important component of mineral resources in Ukraine.
