STUDENTS RESTORED THE 17TH-CENTURY GRAVESTONE

Restoration of an old gravestone was a part of the internship organised by the State Construction Schools in Gdansk. The students needed a few weeks to restore the former splendour of wooden furniture, iron medieval nails, silver cutlery and a gravestone made of sandstone.

The gravestone was found last year in the area of a now non-existing church in Juszków near Pruszcz Gdański. This work of art, which dates back to 17th century, was made of a block of grey sandstone. On the stone we can see a coat of arms and an inscription which refers to Hans Kordt who died in 1607. Renata Wiloch-Kozłowska, an archaeologist and a teacher at the State Construction School who supervised the works of students, admits that restoring the gravestone was an incredibly difficult job.

The team anticipated problems with putting the elements of gravestone together, that is why the students numbered them just after finding them. Thanks to that, they knew the sequence of putting the most important parts of the gravestone together. In spite of that the restoration was very tedious. It looked like figuring out stone puzzles. Students had to match hundreds of elements because not only did sandstone break but also delaminated horizontally. In the future the restored work of art will go to the parishioners from Juszków. Before doing that, however, a special frame will have to be made. Otherwise, the gravestone may break into pieces again.
