The stone sculpture “Amazing grace” is the first out of 100 which Jon Fathom is planning to make. Marble polar bears are supposed to draw attention to the problem of climate warming, which poses a threat to the population of polar bears in Alaska. The artist started making its first work of art before the end of 2012.
In order to do this he used a 4-metre long and a few- ton heavy block. “Amazing grace” was carved in a stone named Alaska Tokeen Grey. The works on the installation took him over 15 months. He was accompanied by a stonemason Olivier Neukom and the team of his assistants. Jon Fanthom is currently working on the second and third monument. The material he is using has a long history dating back to early 20th century. There were eight quarries in Alaska then. The marble which was extracted there was widely used in the United States.
