SARP AWARDS

sarpIn mid July the Zamoyski Palace hosted the ceremony during which the results of the competition for the best architectural project sponsored by public funds were announced.

The Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre got the SARP (the Association of Polish Architects) award this year. The building was made from anthracite brick, wood, steel, glass and natural stone. The winning building was designed by an Italian architect Renato Rizzi, who also designed, among others, the Palace of Sport in Trento (Italy) and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Over 600,000 anthracite bricks were used for building the theatre. Application of this material refers to the medieval architecture of Gdansk. Wood and natural stone were used for making the interiors of the building. POL-AQUA SA company was in charge of implementing Renato Rizzi's project till July 2012, whilst building works were carried out by NDI SA company. The total cost of building and furnishing the Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre was over 80 million zlotys (ca. 20 million euro).

The annual SARP award for the best architectural project in Poland in 2014 went to the Museum and the Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor “Cricoteca” in Cracow. The multi-purpose building is a result of combining old buildings of a former power plant and a modern, over 20-metre high gallery building made from steel trusses and supported by two concrete cores. Granite cubes which were used for this project were provided by quarries from Strzegom. The concept by IQ2 Konsorcjum won in the international architectural competition. The project was co-financed under Małopolska Regional Operational Programme. The total cost of building and furnishing (including setting up of the permanent exhibition) was over 50 million zlotys (ca. 12.5 million euros).
