In spite of the fact that the surface of the Mariacki Sqaure needs urgent repair, controversies as regards the type of raw material which is going to be used is still on.
The first concept that includes the use of dark granite has not been accepted by the provincial conservator. Jan Janczykowski thinks that limestone should be used in that square again. His argument seems to be strong. Light-coloured stone has been in this place for ages. Moreover, thanks to it the square is in a way different from the granite paved space of the Market Square. According to the conservator, the raw material cannot be changed for another because of the copyrights of the square’s project. Limestone, which meets the aesthetic and strength requirements, would be imported from Croatia or Turkey. Controversy arises here because, according to the city authorities, the abovementioned Turkish stone did not resist Polish weather conditions in the past. Cobblestones, which the Mariacki Square is paved with at the moment, had to be spot repaired after 10 years. Recently, the two fighting parties have agreed that the first batch of limestone will have to be tested before they order it. There would be nothing strange in it if the import of stone did not take at least 4 months.
