TIME IS PRECIOUS

Our customers are more and more aware of their expectations regarding functionality, quality and aesthetics. They are interested in top quality products. Stone meets this requirement. But both consumers and contractors are not happy to hear that they will have to bear the costs which are typical of handicrafts.

Is stone industry facing an inevitable decision to implement ideas of the fourth industrial revolution? Industry 4.0 – a term coined for the needs of digitalisation and automation of production has already found an ally in government. According to the Smart Industry 2017 study, which was carried out by the Ministry of Development along with Siemens company, Polish companies are relatively closed to external information and cooperation and reactive towards technological changes.

IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE

It is always so that in the July issue of our bimonthly we devote the most space to companies which supply stonemasons with block materials, slabs and plates. What is then the wholesale market like, what tendencies could be seen and, finally, what is the condition of companies that operate in Poland? Like every year we asked these questions to a group of entrepreneurs.

Stone market is undoubtedly one of industries which are very sensitive to the factors that determine the global business environment. Careful readers of Świat Kamienia will not be surprised that in order to outline some trends that are visible on the Polish wholesale market we asked about the situation on the Far East. After all, while reporting on the recent Xiamen Stone Fair (6-9 March), we wrote about the announcement of revolutionary changes in the trade of imported materials.

At first we should ask about effects of the global agreement between the giants of the forwarding market. Let us remind some facts. In early 2017 “the big four” (CMA CGM, COSCO Container Lines, Evergreen Line, Orient Overseas Container Line) joined forces in container logistics. These companies announced the change of delivery conditions starting from spring 2017.

ASH AND STONE

Burying the deceased, that is the character and form of burial, has been changing rapidly. It can be clearly seen by the rising popularity of cremation. The fact that there are more and more urn burials seems to open for stone companies a vast array of possibilities as regards development of green cemetery areas (park sites).

Although social and cultural role of cemeteries, burial forms or necropolis development elements is evolving, one thing remains unchanged: it is a stone which is still an important material in sepulchral (related to worship of the dead: burials, burial place decorations, tomb architecture) art. The significant role of the stone is a result of its solid structure, durability, eternal beauty and symbolism connected with it. Properties of stone make us think that the power of the dead and spirits of our descendants are still alive in it. Therefore, stone symbolises eternal life.

ON THE ETHOS OF PROFESSION

And what about ways that led us to professional identity? Most of us could say that our professions are extremely useful. That's it – most of us “could” say it.
My mate's profession is quite unique. He works at a stone company. When he speaks about it, those that listen to him are usually … perplexed.
This quote from the Internet proves, and the author of this short text admits to it, that reasons for choosing the profession of a stonemason are hard to understand. One of the most basic components of material culture that has been with us since the beginning of settlement are cemeteries. Should the perception of our profession be limited to sepulchral art and be associated only with funeral industry? Or perhaps, in the near future, it will be done only by archaeologists?

HOW IS THE ROCK?

We are living in the times when both investors and stonemasons are sceptical about what stone to choose. Do not get us wrong – we do not mean that what nature gave us is now coming to an end. Innovative materials is a very good topic for the branch press, but the “rock” has a still very good position!

Sintered quartz, but also latest generation conglomerates are winning the hearts of consumers and contractors – this is what we can read in communications published by more and more companies. The customer today wants guaranteed repeatability, wants to have power over nature and eliminate all that is perceived as beauty of a rock. All that nature gave us (erratic blocks, for example) or we obtained from earth thanks to conscious actions of a human being is no longer fashionable. Is it really so?

MIGRANTS CAPITAL

In Poland there are relatively few migrants, but foreigners may save Poland in the near future as the working age population is getting smaller and smaller. The place of birth of the worker is not important at all when we speak about a craft where, except for skills, you need talent, willingness to learn and commitment.

A huge number of foreigners who are applying for international protection has come to Europe since last year. The wave of over million refugees who arrived to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea was obviously linked with unstable political situation in the Near East. The European Union and particular member countries are not able to separate themselves from the migrants mainly because … the countries need them. The European Commission estimates that by 2020 there will be 16 million of new work places that require high qualifications. According to one of the scenarios in 2050 the demand for foreigners will reach around 130 million people! Many EU countries have been looking for economic migrants in sectors where the problem of no qualified labour force exists.

HOW ARE MINES
!

The time horizon of the navigable rivers project (and the demand for hydro-technical stone) is quite distant, but we can already see some signs of recovery. Prices seem to get stable on a low level and it is difficult to find incentives which could improve the demand for local stone in a short time – except for the programme of improving railway infrastructure.

Together with the reduced number of infrastructural investments we can also observe a decrease in extraction and slow employment of means from the current EU budget. They are all serious threats to the condition of some broken stone and aggregate mines. One more threat appeared in late June: Brexit. Although Great Britain is not going to leave the EU at once, this situation may influence the EU financial envelope. In short, we can say that the dynamics of the demand for rock mining products has slowed down, so it is difficult to expect a significant price increase. Situation like this may be beneficial for companies which are able to combine rising costs, which result from, among others, worse geological and mining conditions of deposits, some of which have been exploited for a long time, with ensuring the most important thing, that is exploitation which is safe for people and environment together with applying optimum technical and technological solutions for a given deposit.
