Nohmul is a pre-Columbian stone pyramid raised about 2,300 years ago by the Maya peoples. This ancient building can be found in the northern part of Belize near Mexico.
A 33-meter high pyramid was one of the biggest in this part of the world. Yes, it was, because a few weeks ago bulldozers and excavators almost completely destroyed one of the biggest Mayan pyramid. The construction company used crushed stones to build ... a road.
Awe Jaim, the president of the Institute of Archaeology in Belize, was shocked with it. The worst thing is, according to him, that the workers knew what they were doing. The builders were aware of the fact that they were destroying an ancient building and the stones gained this way would be used for building one of local roads. Then the question is: why did they do it? Most probably, they did not want to go to get the material to the quarry. The investigation should help to find answers for much more questions.
